How to Build an SEO Action Plan

The Crazy Domains Simple SEO tool facilitates online growth in 4 simple phases that anyone - even SEO beginners - can comprehend and apply, which are as follows:

  1. Phase 1 - Setting up Your SEO Project
  2. Phase 2 - Managing the Health Check & Competitor Analysis Results
  3. Phase 3 - Building Your SEO Action Plan
  4. Phase 4 - Implementing SEO Actions & Improving Based on Results

The first phase is simply setting up your new SEO tool so it knows your business, website, and the keywords that you want to rank for - which will take you not more than 2 minutes. The tool will run its algorithm for checking your website's on-page and technical SEO health and analysing your keywords against your competitors'. All the research is done for you in this phase.

In the second phase, the health check and competitor analysis results are served back to you. This is where you do a run-through of the results using the tool's quick filters.

In this guide, we'll deal with the third phase, which is how you can build your Action Plan. But first, we'll look at what you need to consider when deciding on the SEO Actions to prioritise.

Note: The Crazy Domains Simple SEO tool is self-managed. If you wish for us to manage your website’s SEO, we also have dedicated SEO experts who can ensure you reach your SEO goals faster. Compare self-managed and managed SEO by reading the linked guide.

What to Consider When Building Your SEO Action Plan

The Simple SEO tool assesses your site's functionality and evaluates the best steps to take for optimisation. And, although the goal is to implement all of the SEO Actions suggested by the tool, you will want to first, work on Actions that have the highest impact on your business, but with the lowest cost. Let's take a look at the tool's Action Cards while we learn of the two major things to consider when creating your SEO Action Plan:

FIRST: Which action will make the most impact?

This is perhaps the most important question to ask. You want to identify and fix the issues that affect SEO the most because this will yield the fastest results, too. Here are the actions you can focus on, according to importance:

  1. Penalty issues
If your website has SEO penalties, fixing any other issue will have little to no impact. Penalties happen for various reasons like:
    • keyword stuffing - or excessively adding keywords on a webpage,
    • black hat SEO techniques - e.g. paying others to link to your page,
    • algorithm change - changes in search engines' algorithms that sometimes cause a negative impact on your ranking.
  2. Poor-performing pages
Your page needs to be "indexed" or saved in search engines' servers for it to appear in results pages. Fix issues that make this impossible, like:
    • Pages with poor link structure - broken/non-functioning links, bad/incorrect URL redirects, among others.
    • Pages with duplicate or very poor content - having too little content, content filled with keywords that no longer make sense contextually, content that is of no use or relevance at all.
  3. Content quality issues
These are issues closely related to the former, but are more focused on relevance, importance, or purpose of the content.

Search engines are growing more and more intelligent and are understanding content more like humans do. Make sure that your topics are not just there to target your audience, but that it actually aims to do something for your audience and delivers as promised.

  4. Other technical SEO issues
After you've dealt on the first three groups of issues above, you can go ahead and fix all the other issues to ensure that everything's covered.

It's easy to spot all of these within the SEO tool's Action tab. Each Action needed is displayed as Action Cards where you can immediately spot the following to help you with the first step of your Action Plan:

  • Short description - a short overview of what action is needed.
  • Importance - a badge that lets you know whether it's an urgent need.
  • Category - a label that gives you an idea of where the action is needed, e.g.: Site Content, Design, Web Development, etc.

SECOND: Who will implement these SEO Actions?

Or more specifically, which Actions are they capable of implementing in terms of difficulty and available time? These are your next valid questions for creating your SEO Action Plan.

As seen in the image above, you'll also find an indicator for each action's difficulty level, as well as an estimate of how much time you'll need to implement it. Moreover, clicking on an Action Card will give you an even clearer picture of the scope the action needed:

All of these will give you a rough idea as to which ones you can realistically implement given the resources that you have at hand.
