How to enable MSSQL Database remote connection in Plesk

By default, our Windows shared hosting firewall blocks all external remote connections due to security reasons. If a remote connection is required, you will need to enable the remote access by adding the remote IP address or subnet in the allowed list. Below are three ways you can do this:

  • By creating a new Database (if you don’t have a Database yet)
  • By editing an existing Database user
  • Or, by creating a new Database user

By creating a Database

If you don’t have a Database yet, you can create one then proceed with enabling the MSSQL Database remote access. The instructions below will show you how:

  1. Click Sign Up / Log In at the top of this page.
  2. Ensure that Account Manager is selected from the drop-down menu.
  3. Enter your username and password, then click Log In.
  4. Click on the Visit My Account button.
  5. Click on Web Hosting from the menu at the top of the page.
  6. Click on the web hosting plan you wish to manage.
  7. Click on the Control Panel button to access your Plesk Panel.
  8. Click on the Databases tab from the left-side menu.
  9. Click Add Database.
  10. Enter a Database name.
  11. Select the Database Server type “MSSQL” from the drop-down list.
  12. On Related site, select a domain name from the drop-down list.
  13. Ensure that Create a database user is ticked.
  14. Enter a Database user name.
  15. Enter a password and confirm your password.
  16. On Remote access, choose the option: Allow remote connections from.
  17. Enter the IP addresses or subnets that need remote Database access, then click OK.

Note: The specified IP addresses or subnets are allowed to access the Database on behalf of this user. Your changes in this list will be pre-moderated by your hosting provider.

  18. Wait 10 minutes for the new firewall rule to apply.

Congratulations! You have created a Database and enabled the MSSQL Database remote access.

By editing an existing Database user
